A 1973 recording of the song by Al Wilson reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for one week on January 19, 1974, which sold over two million copies and was named a Cashbox Magazine Number One Single of the Year. Wilson's version also made number ten on the Hot Soul Singles chart. Peabo Bryson had a number one R&B hit with his version of the song in 1989. Bryson's version did not chart on the Hot 100.[1]
